These days, people refer to "East Petaluma" and "West Petaluma" almost as though they are two separate towns. The east side (east of Highway 101) is the younger side, growing up fast and filling with stores, high-tech companies and housing developments. The east side, to the south of town, also contains the harbor/marina area where boats and businesses are anchored and a new Sheraton Hotel is being built. This is also where the main RE/MAX offices are located. General Mariano Vallejo's largest adobe hacienda and rancho, now a state historic park, is also located in East Petaluma. As is the highly regarded Santa Rosa City College's new Petaluma campus. There are also plenty of shopping centers including Parkway Plaza center on Sonoma Parkway that houses a huge G&G Supermarket and a lovely new park called Leghorn Park. Petaluma's municipal airport can also be found on the east side of town as well as two golf courses.
The population of Petaluma is 55,175. The average income is $81,661. 40% of the population commutes to San Francisco, Marin or Santa Rosa. The average home price in Petaluma is $649,281.
